This small-group sourdough workshop is designed to teach you the building blocks of sourdough baking and deepen your confidence in sourdough bread making, all in the cosy setting of our home kitchen micro bakery.

Together you’ll make and bake your very own sourdough bread while exploring every stage of the process. You’ll learn about ingredients and why we use them, dough elasticity, stretch and fold, shaping, proving, temperature and timing, scoring, baking methods, and how to tell when your bread is perfectly baked. We’ll also talk about flour choices, equipment, and how to add exciting extras such as seeds, cheese or olives. You’ll get hands-on experience feeling the difference between correctly proved and under- or over-proved dough, and learn how tools like the bench scraper can make your baking easier.

If you’ve tried our sourdough, you’ll know how passionate we are about bread making. This workshop is ideal for beginners, but it’s also perfect for anyone who’s already had a go at sourdough and would like more guidance, troubleshooting and a better understanding of the process.

Classes are limited to a maximum of seven participants, creating an intimate, supportive learning environment where you will be given plenty of individual attention.

What’s included:

  • Teas, coffees, cold drinks and snacks
  • A recipe booklet with the recipes we’ve worked on
  • A glossary of sourdough baking terms
  • Banneton (bread proving basket)
  • Sourdough starter
  • Dough scraper
  • Your own bakes
  • A loaf to bake at home
  • Optional: take the dough you’ve worked on home to finish and turn it into a loaf yourself or we would be happy to do this for you
  • DAS BROTHAUS bag to carry your goodies

The workshop runs from 1pm to approximately 4:30pm and takes place in Germany Beck, Fulford, York. It’s designed to give you the confidence and knowledge to go home and bake your own sourdough successfully.

This is a very hands-on class, so be prepared to get involved! You’ll be kneading, shaping, scoring with a razor blade, and working with a very hot oven, baking trays and boiling water. Please wear comfortable clothes you don’t mind getting a little floury and doughy, roll up your sleeves, and bring an apron if you’d like.

You’ll make, shape and bake bread during the session—some dough prepared from scratch in class and some pre-prepared dough ready for shaping and baking on the day. We’ll use our commercial stone oven, and we’ll share lots of tips so you can achieve similar results at home.

Please bring a pen and notebook if you’d like to take notes, and let us know of any allergies when booking.

We’d love to welcome you into our micro bakery and share the joy of sourdough with you.
